The Modern Marketing Funnel: From Awareness to Revenue

Every buyer moves through stages before purchasing — even if those stages take thirty seconds for an emergency plumber or six months for an assisted-living decision. The marketing funnel is a simple model for designing the right message for each stage.

The classic model: AIDA

The funnel traces back to the AIDA model — Attention, Interest, Desire, Action. Modern marketers usually simplify it into three stages:

  • TOFU — Top of funnel (awareness): the buyer has a problem or need, and may not know you exist.
  • MOFU — Middle of funnel (consideration): the buyer is comparing options and evaluating trust.
  • BOFU — Bottom of funnel (decision): the buyer is ready to choose and needs a reason to choose you now.

After the purchase comes the stage many businesses forget: retention and advocacy — repeat purchases, referrals and reviews.

Stage by stage

Top of funnel — be discovered

Goal: reach the right people and earn attention. Channels: SEO content answering early questions, short-form video, Meta and YouTube prospecting ads, PR, AI assistant visibility. Content: educational guides, "how to know if you need…", myth-busting, trend pieces. Metrics: reach in the target audience, new visitors, engaged views, branded search growth.

Middle of funnel — be trusted

Goal: turn interest into preference. Channels: retargeting ads, email nurture, comparison and case-study pages, webinars, reviews. Content: case studies, before/after results, pricing guides, comparisons, FAQs, founder or team stories. Metrics: return visits, email sign-ups, content engagement, time to conversion.

Bottom of funnel — be chosen

Goal: convert intent into a booking or purchase. Channels: high-intent search (SEO and Google Ads), local map pack, retargeting with offers, sales follow-up. Content: service pages, clear offers, guarantees, testimonials, easy booking, live chat. Metrics: conversion rate, cost per lead or purchase, lead-to-close rate.

After the sale — be remembered

Goal: increase lifetime value and generate referrals. Channels: email and SMS, loyalty programs, maintenance plans, review requests. Metrics: repeat purchase rate, retention, reviews, referral revenue, LTV.

Common funnel mistakes

  1. Only funding the bottom. Search ads and retargeting are efficient but capped by existing demand. Without top-of-funnel investment, growth stalls.
  2. Same message for everyone. Asking a cold audience to "book now" wastes budget; sending educational content to a ready buyer slows the sale.
  3. No nurture. Most visitors are not ready on day one. Without email, retargeting or follow-up, they forget you.
  4. Ignoring post-purchase. Your cheapest next sale is usually an existing customer.

The funnel is not a straight line anymore

Today's buyers jump between stages — they see a video, ask ChatGPT for options, read reviews, search your brand, leave, and return through a retargeting ad. That is why consistency matters: the same clear positioning, proof and offer should appear everywhere a buyer might look.

A simple full-funnel plan

Stage One action to start this month
Awareness Publish two answer-first articles for questions buyers ask early
Consideration Turn your best client result into a case study page
Decision Add reviews, guarantee and a one-click booking option to key service pages
Retention Set up an automatic review request and a 30-day follow-up email

The bottom line

A funnel is not a diagram for a slide deck — it is a checklist that makes sure every buyer, at every stage, finds a reason to move one step closer to you.
